Dentures or Implants?

dentures

When it comes to making the best decision about your teeth, it’s important to understand your options. If you’re looking to restore or replace missing teeth from tooth decay, gum disease or injury, there are two solutions dentists often recommend, dentures and implants. We are committed to making sure you have all the  necessary information to make the best decision for you. So here are the pros and cons on dentures and implants.

Dentures

Dentures, also known as false teeth, are removable replacements that are designed to resemble your natural teeth and gum tissue. While dentures may remind you of grandpa playing hide ‘n seek with his teeth, they have come a long way with proper fittings and more stable adhesives.

There are two types of dentures, complete (used when there are no teeth remaining) and partial (used when there are some teeth remaining).

Pros:

  • Protect tissue and reduces bleeding after tooth extraction

  • Improve speech and ability to chew

  • Removable, which allows gum tissue to rest and cleanse

  • Restore your natural smile

  • Ready for placement in 8-12 weeks after gums heal

Cons:

    • May take several appointments for proper fitting

    • Initially may feel awkward and can cause discomfort

    • May shift and slide while eating

Dental Implants

Implants are artificial tooth roots, surgically anchored to the jaw bone to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. The best candidates for dental implants are those with healthy gums, adequate bone in the jaw and good oral health.

Pros:

    • Comfortable and durable

    • No slippage or movement

    • Cleaned like permanent teeth – brushing and flossing

    • Look and feel natural

    • Last up to 40+ years

Cons:

    • Require minor surgery

    • Not all patients are candidates for implants

  • After implants heal, could take 8+ weeks for fabrication and tooth attachment

Dental implants are one of the most successful and popular dental treatments around. Comfortable, durable, and natural looking, they provide a permanent solution for severe tooth problems. They can be used to replace as many teeth as needed, getting your smile back to the way it used to be. We are experts in planning, surgery, and dental restoration, meaning that you’ll be receiving the highest standard of care possible,” says Dr. Espinosa.

Five Stars from Sandra

“I have been coming here since September 2016 and have been nothing buy pleased with the service I have received from Dr. Espinosa and the entire staff. Of all of the dentists that I have seen over the last 50 plus years, Bonita Del Rey is my favorite and best!! From my first visit I was very impressed with the amount of time spent going over the treatment I would need and were even open to making changes when I decided that the partials I received didn’t work out for me and choose to do implants instead. The best part of my experience with Bonita Del Rey is that I am treated like family here.”

Testimonial from patient who received Mini Dental Implants treatment at Bonita del Rey Dental by Dr. Aldo Espinosa

It’s quick, not very expensive and it can be done in one day. He explained to me my bone is in good shape to have [mini dental implants] and we did how he promised in exactly one day. I went home and could eat food the same day.”
