5 Simple Tips to Protect Your Tooth Enamel

Tooth enamel is the thin, translucent layer of protective coating on your teeth. It shields your teeth from the daily activities like biting, chewing, grinding, as well as, temperatures and chemicals. This durable shell is actually the hardest tissue in your body, but it can chip, crack and erode. While you can’t replace your tooth enamel once it’s gone, you can prevent damage and try to build it back. Here are 5 simple tips to help your protect tooth enamel.

1. Watch what you drink

The biggest culprit of tooth erosion is acids wearing down the enamel on your teeth. That said, avoid large consumptions of acidic beverages like sodas, fruit juices and alcohol. Drink plenty of water, even better, drink dairy! The calcium can help remineralize tooth enamel, building it back up.

2. Reach for the gum, instead of mindless snacking

Chewing sugar-free gum increases saliva production, which in turn washes away debris and acid from your teeth. This helps protect your enamel throughout the day, plus it doesn’t hurt to have minty fresh breath!

3. Limit sugar intake

Sports drinks and sweet treats are full of sugars which produce decay causing bacteria – wearing down tooth enamel. Try trading in that sweet treat for a calcium rich alternative or simply add more vegetables to your diet.

4. Avoid stress or better yet, practice meditation

Stress can lead to clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth, both which can erode tooth enamel. Try incorporating a fun new workout into your routine, or download the latest meditation app on your phone. It just takes a few minutes a day to reduce your stress level, and your entire body will thank you.

5. Keep up with daily oral health, and consult with your dentist

As always, make sure you’re brushing and flossing twice daily. And you may consider incorporating an enamel strengthening toothpaste. Make sure you’re visiting your dentist regularly to stay on top of your oral health care.
